Greetings, fellow bloggers and readers! Today at #AlGourmet, we are celebrating #watermelon day! Watermelon is one of the juiciest fruits in the world of fruits. You would know, because with every bite of this delicious fruit, you would have experienced sweet watermelon nectar dribbling down your chins. On this special day, we bring to you top 5 facts about watermelon that you probably didn’t know!

Watermelon is considered as both fruit and vegetable. The seeds of the watermelon and a sweet taste accompanying every mouthful of the watermelon make it a fruit. Watermelon is also a vegetable because it is a part of the cucumber and squash family.

92% of the fruit is water, which is why it has received a stamp of approval as a summer fruit! And why not, after all, it is super refreshing!

Believe it or not, watermelon is also super food! Watermelon has only 40 calories per cup, yet it has more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant. It is used by people to prevent heart disease, reduce inflammation and help fight cancer of the pancreas, colon, bladder, among many others. Watermelon is also high in vitamin C and a good source of fiber.

The seeds and rind of a watermelon are all edible. Simply blitz in a blender with lemon juice to make a quick, refreshing drink.

Apart from carrots, watermelon is also a great source of Vitamin A which is useful in maintaining good eyesight.

If this blog post was not enough to tell you how mighty powerful a watermelon is here are a few words from the great author Mark Twain:

“When one has tasted watermelon he knows what the angels eat.”

Who would have thought that such deep love could be felt for a fruit?
